'Revive Technical Schools to Engage Youths in Rural Areas' - Elelu
Government at all levels have been urged to revive technical schools across the country to serve as catchment areas for admission into Polytechnics in Nigeria.
Presenting a paper entitled: "Repositioning education system in Nigeria", at the second media parliament organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists, (NUJ), Kwara State council in Ilorin recently, the Rector, Kwara State Polytechnics, Ilorin, Alhaji Mas'ud Elelu said technical schools can also help to de-emphasise offering of management courses.
The Rector also said that technical schools would ensure students to focus more on technology and science-related courses in order to meet the needs of their communities as well as groom students to be job creators rather than job seekers.
Alhaji Elelu also said that the implementation of UNESCO's 26 per cent in the national budget, promotion of child-friendly and teacher-friendly school environment, review of school curricula to promote critical and relevant learning, improvement of teacher quality through employment of professionals and prompt payment of salary among others, would go a long way to reposition education sector.
He, therefore, advocated sanity in the education sector saying: "Let the tertiary academic preparation be balanced with vocational or professional programme using computers and teaching machines.
"Let us re-structure tertiary system, let one student take strength from one another. And for the future of tertiary education, let us end the divisive, snobbish, destructive, distinction in learning that do no service to the cause of knowledge for efficiency and do no honour to the name Nigeria enterprise in the global economy," Elelu stressed.
