An Ilorin magistrate's court has ordered the remand of two suspects over an alleged attempt to murder a sugarcane seller, Habila Salisu, in Eiyenkorin, Asa Local Government Area of Kwara State.

The suspects were charged on offenses bordering on criminal conspiracy, robbery, causing grievous hurt, attempt to commit culpable homicide and for being suspected members of a secret cult.

The offences are contrary to section 97, 298, 248 and 229 of penal code punishable under section 14 of secret cult and secret societies (Prohibition) Law 2016.

The duo of AbdulWaheed Yaro and Habeeb Ismail alongside others the police said are now at large, approached Salisu under the guise of patronizing him.

"But they collected his sugarcane from him and refused to pay him.

"Rather they started beating him and inflicted various degrees of injuries on him in the process," according to the First Information Report.

"The defendants and their cohorts who are members of a notorious secret cult group, also robbed their victim of the sum of N45,000 which was taken from his pocket.

"They were on the verge of killing Habila before he was rescued by some members of the community who called the attention of the police to the incident and eventual arrest of Yaro and Ismail", the charge sheet added.

The prosecutor, DSP Ologbonsaye, pleaded with the court to remand the defendants in order for the police to complete their investigation

The presiding Magistrate, Afusat Alege, in her ruling, ordered them to be remanded at the correctional facility and adjourned the matter till April 4th, 2022 for further mention.
