Electricity tariff: Ex NLC boss advises Buhari to caution NERC

Date: 2021-01-10

Ex-Vice President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Issa Aremu, yesterday urged President Muhammadu Buhari to caution the National Electricity Regulatory Agency (NERC) against incessant increase in the electricity tariff in the country.

He said the recent hike of the electricity tariff was not justified based on the persistent nationwide blackout and failure of the electricity distributors to address the problem.

Aremu told reporters in Ilorin, the Kwara state capital on the sidelines of the event commemorating his 60th birthday.

He observed that the government has a responsibility to regulate the price of electricity consumed in the country.

The labour leader regretted that Nigerians had been left at the mercy of Electricity Generation Companies (GENCOs) and Electricity Distribution Companies (DISCOs), who issue monthly bills that are not commensurate with the supply.

Aremu, a former governorship candidate of Labour Party in Kwara State, called on the Minister of Power to rein- in the nation's electricity regulatory agency and to cease acting as mouthpiece of GENCOs and DISCOs.
