Kwara community awaits appointment of new monarch

Date: 2020-09-04

INDIGENES of Share in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State are waiting for the appointment of a new monarch for the community’s vacant stool.

Investigation by our correspondent showed that the community might wait longer than necessary, as a section of the community has faulted the selection process.

The throne became vacant on November 2, 2019 when the then occupant and the 10th Olupako of Share, Alhaji Abubakar Garba (Dosunmu ll) passed on.

There are two ruling houses in the community. They are Dada and Akinyode.

It was gathered that following the death of the monarch, Ifelodun Traditional Council intervened by appointing a-seven man kingmakers for the selection of new monarch.

Acting on the directive of the Ifelodun Traditional Council, the kingmakers wrote a letter to the Director of Personnel Management (DPM) in the local government suggesting two names from each of the ruling houses as eligible for appointment.

The names are AbdulRaheem Olaoye Abubakar and Haruna Olawale Suleiman, (both of Dada ruling house) and Ibrahim Kayode Zubair Adedokun and Muhammed Sogo Olupako (both of Akinyode ruling house).

It was also gathered that based on the inability of the kingmakers to zero in on a particular candidate, the Ifelodun Traditional Council subjected the choice of the candidate to vote.

The council invited the kingmakers to converge on Igbaja and asked them to put the selection into vote, a source said.

The source went on: "The successful candidate was also from Akinyode ruling house. He is a serving secondary school teacher. He is named Muhammed Sogo Olupako. He polled five out of votes cast."

But Chief Elemosho Alajogun of Share Lawal Idris Elemosho said the process the traditional council adopted in arriving at their choice is antithetical to the tradition and custom of the community.
