The Kwara State Commissioner for Works and Transport, Dr. Abubakar Amuda-Kannike, has warned against unauthorised digging of roads or laying of pipelines and telecommunications cables in Kwara State.

He stated that indiscriminate cutting and digging of roads across the state without approval had seriously hindered the free flow of traffic and free flow of water within the drainage systems in the state as well as caused a lot of hardship to the road users.

He spoke during the inauguration of road minders in Ilorin on Tuesday.

Amuda-Kannike said the state government established the road minders to checkmate indiscriminate damage to the roads.

He added that the measure would halt the hardship encountered by road users in the state as a result of indiscriminate and unauthorised cutting of the roads.

He stated that it would also stop the destruction of people's property and wastage of state resources.

"The committee is therefore a tonic for sustenance of the state roads by preventing indiscriminate cutting of roads which has been causing immeasurable damage to the roads, causing hardship to road users and residents and even in some cases leading to fatal accident," Amuda-Kannike said.

The commissioner, later during an inspection tour of some roads embarked upon by the state government, said the government placed great emphasis on efficient transportation to accelerate socio-economic, agricultural and industrial activities as well as improve on the welfare of the people.
