Alarm over Indiscriminate Refuse Dump

Date: 2012-09-03

Residents of Olosun Close near Circular Hotel in llorin West Local Government Area of Kwara State have raised alarm over the indiscriminate dumping of refuse in an abandoned parcel of land in the area, appealing to the government to come to their rescue.

They warned against hazard that may occur as a result of the ugly trend.

In a chat with City Rove at the weekend, some residents described the development as uncalled for and pleaded with government to put measures in place to avert the imminent scourge.

Mr. Ige Joseph, a shop owner in the area, said the parcel of land has been abandoned for many years, pointing out that it has become a hideout for miscreants who terrorize at night. He added that the deserted land was becoming a nuisance to the residents and called on appropriate authorities to intervene on time.

According to him, "The land has been abandoned for many years, which now poses threat to the people of the area. Some unidentified people have turned it to refuse dump.

In fact, the offensive odour oozing from the abandoned site has become a nuisance to the wellbeing of the residents".

He, however, begged the state government to provide a motorized borehole to the people of the area, explaining that they have been suffering for drinkable for quite long time.

Another respondent who would not want his name in print told City Rove that the abandoned parcel of land belongs to the state government and wondered why people had turned it to dump site.

He said, "Government started a construction on the site four years ago, and to our dismay, the project which was at foundation, was abandoned afterwards."
