Unilorin Chief Imam Tasks Muslims, Christians on Objectivity
Muslim and Christian faithful have been called upon to embrace objectivity in their preaching and avoid inciting followers to violence.
The Chief Imam of University of Ilorin, Professor Abdulganiyu Oladosu, said this at the Second Radio Nigeria Harmony FM Ramadan Lecture (Tafsir) at Idofian, Kwara State.
In a paper, titled, 'Achieving Peace and Unity Through Religion: The Islamic Approach',
Oladosu enjoined pastors and imams to incorporate Muslim-Christian materials into their addresses, lectures and sermons as way of achieving peaceful co-existence.
He also suggested that a National Joint Committee be set up to address ethno-religious conflicts and other matters of mutual interests at all levels of government. This should be supervised by the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC) and funded by the federal government.
Oladosu, who decried the level of insecurity in the country, particularly the burning of places of worship, said that under no circumstance should a Muslim or Christian be killed in the name of religion.
Chairman of the occasion and Kwara State Commissioner for Energy, Alhaji Tajudeen Sulu-Oloje, who commended Radio Nigeria Harmony FM for the lecture, said the state government remains resolute at ensuring peace and harmony.
Also speaking, Coordinator of Muslim Media Watch Group, Alhaji Abdullahi Ibrahim, said there is need for harmonious relationship between Christians and Muslims.
Earlier in an address, General Manager of Radio Nigeria Harmony FM Idofian, Alhaji AbdulMualiy Olarewaju Adegboyega, said the country would witness rapid economic growth and development when there is relative peace among adherents of Islam and Christianity.
The Ramadan lecture was attended by Islamic scholars and traditional rulers from across the state including the Oludofian of Idofian, Oba Zubair Agboola Oyesoro (II).
