Be selfish about your health, Mrs Ahmed urges women

Mrs Omolewa Ahmed, wife of Kwara Governor has called on women to be selfish about their health by regular check-up when it comes to cases of cancer.

Ahmed made the call on Wednesday at the General Hospital in Lafiagi, Edu Local Government Area of Kwara during a monitoring tour of the Life Empowers Anchors Hope (LEAH) Cancer Centres in Lafiagi and Offa, in Offa LGA.

She advised that unless women start to care more for their health and put aside any other thing for the moment,they may be jeopardizing their health.

The Govs wife, who is founder of LEAH foundation said she intends to upgrade the cancer centres and provide Colposcopy, a medical diagnostic procedure to examine an illuminated, magnified view of the cervix and the tissues of the vagina and vulva.

"I am also here to see how we can encourage patronage by women to come out and screen for cancer.

"We are especially particular about community participation," she said.

Ahmed also said she intends to install solar energy for the necessary power at the cancer centres, adding that community health workers would be trained to man activities of the centre.

She appealed to news media outlets to see it as their corporate social responsibility to give more prominence news about the scourge of cancer in women.

Earlier during her visit to the Emir of Lafiagi, Alhaji Kawu Haliru, she appealed to well to do individuals in the community to assist the foundation’s effort in fighting cancer.

Also during her tour at the General Hospital, Offa, Ahmed said the visit is also to upgrade facilities in the cancer centre and train staffs.

She explained that there is MoU already signed with Unilorin to include Cervical cancer screening in regular admission package.

Reacting to the visit, the Chief Medical Director of General Hospital Offa, Dr Abdulwasiu Giwa said that Ahmed's visits was timely, as cancer cases is on the rise.

"Earlier today we loss a patient with cancer of the liver," he said. He urged people to come and screen themselves, adding that it is preventable if detected early.
