Geri Alimi under pass: JAACK faults choice of alternative routes

Date: 2017-01-27

The Joint Action Against Corruption in Kwara (JAACK) has faulted the decision of the Kwara State Ministry of Works to divert vehicular movement to roads that are impassable and equally due for construction in the first place.

In a statement in Ilorin on Wednesday by its Organising Secretary, Joe Mahmud noted that the state government is only playing to the gallery and ill-prepared for the work.

The group was worried that government knew that the Asa Dam- Egbejila road has been neglected for years; it only resumed work on it January 2016 and it could not make use of one whole year to complete the project. " That particular road is still under construction with a bridge at about 15% level of execution and the whole area is under the cover of dust. With the dust invading the area while traffic was light, what becomes the health situation of the residents when heavier traffic is diverted to the road?

He added that the Taiwo - Oko-Erin - Osere end of the road as part of alternative routes is an indicative of a government that is on vacation.

"It is not only an eye sore but ridiculous that a responsive government will put her citizens on that long abandoned and failed road. Is this the way road construction and diversion are done in other places?

Mahmud cautioned that rather than hurry people into another rounds of danger, health hazards and ultimately loss of lives the government should exercise restraint and put everything in place before closing Geri Alimi - Airport road.

" We should not forget in a hurry how a young lady was knocked down by a taxi driver in front of a petrol station on Asa Dam road in the first week of the new year when KWARMA resumed partial work on that road owing to poor diversion method," it concluded.
