'Why flooding persists' - Charlotte
The menace of flooding in some major cities in the country has been blamed on Nigerians' non-challant attitude to waste disposal.
According to a Professor of Environmental Engineering and Science at the University of North Carolina, Charlotte, United States, Hillary Inyang, while delivering the Eighth Mosobalaje Oyawoye Endowed Lecture at the University of Ilorin, the development would require prompt solution to secure the future of the major cities against flood disasters.
The lecture, entitled: "Integrated Waste Management: A Global Perspective," was organised by the Faculty of Science of the institution.
According to the don, the capacity to manage waste in countries with high population density, especially those located in the humid tropics of Africa, must be improved upon so as to prevent the increasing generation of slums that is detrimental to human health, environmental quality and regional security.
Inyang charged countries located in the tropics on the need to develop and implement sustained integrated waste management systems comprising regulatory framework and policies, research, education, codes and standards, market incentives to promote entrepreneurship in waste management, as well as monitoring and enforcement systems.
