Kwara Assembly moves against some fuel stations

Date: 2015-09-21

Local councils in Kwara State have been urged to institute adequate measures to check indiscriminate building of filling stations in residential areas.

The directive was given at the weekend by an adhoc committee of the State House of Assembly to control proliferation and location of filling stations in places dangerous to health of citizens and impose sanctions.

Chairman of the committee, Kamaldeen Fagbemi addressing a gathering in Bode-Saadu, headquarters of Moro Local Government, explained that collaboration between the Local Governments and the House of Assembly in this respect became imperative to avert tragedies that could attend wrong siting of petrol stations in the state.

According to him, the downtrodden citizens should be removed from the unnecessary evils that trail harbouring petrol stations in their vicinity.

Fagbemi reminded council chairmen that as the chief security officers of their respective local governments, they are saddled with responsibility of vigilance on certain activities, particularly those that pose security threat to lives and properties.

Chairman of the Local Government, AbdulGaniyu Ajibola, frowned at the indiscriminate establishment of filling stations in residential areas, which he described as risky, stressing that no responsible government could fold its arms and allow such trend continue unchecked.
