'Serious' low turn out in Kwara

Date: 2015-04-11

The governorship and House of Assembly elections in Kwara North senatorial district started peacefully in all the local government areas of the senatorial district.

However, Daily Trust reports that there is low turn out in all the polling units in the district. One of the voters who spoke with our correspondent said, "There is serious low turn out here. We can't explain why it is so".

Back in Ilorin, the state capital, Special Adviser to the Governor on Political Matters, Alhaji Bibire Ajape who spoke with newsmen at polling unit 005, Jagun in Ilorin East Local Government confirmed that the "turn out is a bit low".

However, he said the process is going on peacefully. Ajape, a chieftain of APC noted that the low turn out might not be unconnected with the opposition's acceptance of defeat.

Also speaking, Hon. Nimota Ibrahim who is the Chairman, House Committee on Education said the process has been peaceful, orderly and there is less tension compared to the last elections.

Daily Trust correspondent reports that all the polling units along Ahmadu Bello Way Government House in Ilorin witnessed "serious" voters' apathy compared to the last elections.

The situation is not different at Ajikobi ward of Ilorin West Local Government.

Low turn out of voters was witnessed at polling units 005, 006 and 021 at Opobiyi, Agbaji quarters where the Sarakis, as well as Minister of National Planning, Dr. Abubakar Sulaiman are expected to vote.

It would be recalled that the huge turn out of voters in the Presidential and National Assembly election led to rowdiness at the polling centres but the situation changed in today's election as few voters turned out to participate in the election.

Analysts say the low turn out might be as a result of the outcome of last election with APC sweeping all NASS seats in the state.
