Rotary Club distributes food items to the needy in Ilorin
Members of Rotary Club, GRA Ilorin chapter, on Sunday, took to the streets to distribute food items to the needy and the less privileged during a road show in the metropolis.
The club's Chattered President, Col. Theophilus Bamgboye (rtd), the former Military Administrator of Bauchi and Osun States, who led the road show, said it was aimed at creating awareness that the club is a humanitarian society.
Some areas of the metropolis visited by members of the club included Challenge, Post Office, Emir’s Palace market, Gambari, Ipata, Maraba, Sango, Fate, Tanke amongst others.
At the Emir's Palace and Gambari area where there were high concentration of destitute and beggars, the members distributed 10kg bags of branded rice and beans.
Speaking to journalists after the event, Bamgboye said the road show was to create awareness among the people about the activities of the club.
He said more than 2, 000 bags of branded rice and beans, were distributed during the road show to the people, irrespective of their social background.
He said that the club was a humanitarian Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) established to assist the needy and the less privileged in the society.
According to him, the road show is also to sensitise the public on the humanitarian mission and vision of the club.
Bamgboye said the sensitisation was also designed to make well meaning Nigerians participate in the activities of the club designed to uplift the downtrodden.
He said that contrary to public perception, the club was not a secret society while its membership was not restricted to the rich.
The president said GRA Ilorin chapter, said that members of the club were involved in the rehabilitation of the dilapidated Isolo-Opin Secondary School in Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara.
Also speaking, the President of Ilorin Metro, Rotarian Salami Onaolapo, said that Rotary was involved in vocational skills acquisition, social rehabilitation of the indigent, education and eradication of killer diseases as polio. (NAN)
