INEC Urged to Extend Re-registration of Voters in Kwara
Kwara state chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Hon. Iyiola Oyedepo has appealed to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to extend the ongoing re-registration of voters by two days, so as to assist the prospective voters to register their names for the next year general elections.
Oyedepo made the appeal in Ilorin at the weekend while speaking with journalists on the ongoing re-registration of prospective voters in eight local government councils of the state. The eight affected local government councils are, Asa, Ekiti, Ilorin South, Ilorin East, Irepodun, Isin, Moro and Offa.
He said the first two days of the exercise, which commenced on Wednesday, were wasted by people while looking for where to get registered, He added that other challenges include malfunctioning of INEC equipment and violence in some parts of the state.
The PDP chairman, who also alleged inducement of INEC ad-hoc staff by some politicians in the state to perpetuate illegalities, said registration officers and security personnel that were investigated and found to have compromised should be changed.
He suggested that INEC should plan for four--ear voters' registration programme, adding that such long period would enable the commission cope with large population of eligible voters.
He said one Data Capturing Machine was not enough for a polling booth, added that INEC did not envisage large population of voters because it did not adequately prepare for the exercise.
