'Why We Are Marking Democracy Day'

Date: 2014-05-26

Kwara State Government has said it is marking democracy day despite rising insurgency in the country to celebrate the system as the last hope of the common man.

Briefing journalists at the weekend on the third year anniversary of Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed's administration, commissioner for works and transport, Dr. Amuda Kannike said, "as a state, we are not insensitive to the plight and the situation of the nation but the option we have as a state is to be forlorn and be helpless in the situation that Nigeria has found herself."

Chairman of the anniversary committee and Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Isiaka Gold, highlighted the various programmes lined up for the anniversary which started last Friday with Juma'at prayer and will end on June 4.

Among the programmes is the launching of employment scheme for 5, 200 youths, commissioning of four newly renovated general hospitals, road projects across the state, waterworks, among others.

The SSG noted that Ahmed's administration deliberately focused attention on youth to eradicate poverty and youth restiveness, saying youth in the state had never had it so good.
