Kwara governor advises Islamic organisations
Gov. Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara State has called on Islamic organisations to promote religious values on the basis of justice, equity and respect for adherents of other faiths in the country.
Ahmed made the call in Ilorin when members of the Shehu Alimi Islamic Foundation (SAIF), led by their National President, Dr Abdulkadri Oba-Solagberu, visited him at the Government House.
According to the governor, Islam promotes peace, tolerance and equitable distribution of resources as well as positive attitudes among believers.
"Islam is not a religion of impunity but a religion of even distribution of wealth and resources," the governor said.
He observed that the crises in some countries, especially in Africa and the Middle East, were due to the failure of their leaders to adhere to Islamic injunctions on equitable distribution of resources.
He commended the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, for establishing SAIF and advised the members to consult widely in carrying out their activities.
The leader of the delegation, Dr Oba-Solagberu, said the goals of the foundation included "rendering support to Muslim widows, orphans and vulnerable children, provision of scholarship to indigent students of Arabic and Islamic studies as well as the maintenance of peaceful coexistence among adherents of religions in the state."
Meanwhile, the Emir of llorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, has charged wealthy Muslims to use their fortune for the propagation of Islam.
The monarch gave the charge at his palace in llorin during a reception, at the instance of SAIF, for three winners who represented Kwara State at the recent national Qur'an recitation competition in Jigawa State.
The traditional ruler condemned what he called wasteful spending among some wealthy Muslims and advised them to make amends by utilising their wealth in the aid of Islam.
Sulu-Gambari urged them to sponsor activities geared towards advancing the cause of Islam.
The emir congratulated the winners and advised Nigerians to pay attention to the growth of their children so that they can become useful members of the society.
