Gov Ahmed Seeks FG's Assistance On Irrigation

Date: 2012-01-25

The Kwara State Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed has solicited the support of the Federal Government in the area of irrigation for the state's commercial farm in Shonga, Edu local government area, to enable farmers practise all-year-round farming. Ahmed made the appeal in an interview with newsmen in Shonga, Edu local government area of the state, during an unscheduled visit to the newly established Shonga modern poultry farm. Stressing the need for federal government's support for irrigation in the area, the governor said that the State government had provided some facilities to assist the farmers, but it was inadequate, because irrigation was a capital intensive exercise. "When you talk of commercial farming, it only makes sense when you have access to water and you are able to do an all-year-round farming, it cannot be supported under the rainfall water supply", he said.
