An Ilorin Area Court in Kwara State has dissolved the three-year-old marriage between one Sherifat Azeez and her husband, Nurudeen, over the latter’s smoking habit.

Thirty one-year-old Sherifat, a resident of Maraba Area in Ilorin, Kwara State capital, had prayed the court to dissolve her marriage to Nurudeen, saying her husband was addicted to cigarettes.

She accused her husband of smoking everywhere in their sitting room, not minding the negative effect on the health of others.
“My husband will even at times smoke in our bedroom and sitting room, polluting the whole environment and making it uncomfortable for us,” she said.

According to her, their marriage was contracted in 2011 and was yet to produce any child.

“My lord, I want an end to this marriage because I see no reason living with a man who values cigarettes more than his wife,” she said.
The defendant did not object to the prayer of his wife, saying she was free to go.

“My wife knew I was a smoker before we got married, so I wonder why she now complains about my smoking habit,” he said.
He prayed the court to grant the prayer of his wife without any claim.

The judge, Mr Yusuf Abdulkareem, dissolved the marriage and issued a certificate of divorce to the plaintiff.
