Principals Flay Rise in Exam 'Miracle' Centres
Secondary school principals under the All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSSS) in Kwara State have complained over the influx of so-called exam miracle centres across the country.
They said the trend if not halted could drive secondary schools into extinction, lamenting that the situation had caused low registration of students in school-based external examinations. It is a common practice for students to register for the senior certificate examinations like the West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the National Examination outside their schools.
The newly inaugurated president of the association, Dr .Omowumi Oloyede and her predecessor, Alhaji Kuranga, Omomeji expressed the concern in their separate addresses at the inauguration of new officers of the union held at Queen Elizabeth School, Ilorin yesterday.
Omomeji said the confederation had written several complaint letters to the state Ministry of Education on the development and the need to act promptly. He suggested that the May/June examinations conducted by the National Business and Technical Examination Board (NABTEB) should be school-based to curtail the trend. On her part, Oloyede identified inconsistency of educational policies, unqualified and ill-motivated teachers, low commitment of parents to the welfare of their children as well as child labour and the growing drift of our final year students to the so called magic centres as some of the challenges confronting the educational sector at the post primary level.
