WAUG 2012: Mixed fortunes for Unilorin, as BIU shines in basketball event

Date: 2012-04-05

IT was a mixed fortune for the University of Ilorin basketball teams at the ongoing 13th West Africa University Games at the school sports complex on Sunday just as Benson Idahosa University (BIU) female team beats Benue State University team 26-16.

The male basketball team redeemed its image at the encounter with 35 - 22 points over Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUT Minna) to record its first victory at the event having lost to University of Ghana, Legon 52-53 a day earlier.

However, it was a different story in the female event as Unilorin female basketball team got more than what they bargained for from University of Lagos dames who battered them 77-20 at the close of the encounter.

The Unilorin team supporters club who had come to the game to cheer their darling team to victory against the Akokites team went home disappointed at the end of the encounter when the Lagos based school dominated the proceeding right from the blast of the whistle to teach them the rudiments of the game.

In the other results, University of Benin were better off against UG, Legon with 39-32 points while Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) defeated University of Abomey Calavi (UAC) from Benin Republic while University of Jos and University of Abuja match ended in favour of the former with just a point difference.

Also, in the handball event decided in the morning, Uniben female team capitalized on the inexperience of the Unilorin girls to make mince of the host with 45-3 goals to send a warning signals to other contenders in the event.

Meanwhile, the table tennis event slated to serve-off on Sunday morning was marred by protest from some participating schools over the use of non bonafide students at the event while the coordinator of the event, Peter Oddiah told Tribunesports that the cases have been referred to the accreditation committee for review hoped that they would start the event as soon as it was resolved amicably.
