Ilorin: Worshippers attack gov's convoy at Eid ground

Date: 2013-08-10

Security agents deployed to the Ilorin Eid prayer ground, in Kwara state, were yesterday put to task, following an attack on the convoy of Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed of the state.

Blueprint gathered that the assailants pelted the governor's convoy in reaction to the alleged highhandedness of some overzealous security agents at the prayer ground.

The governor's motorcade, which came to the prayer ground around 10 a.m., shortly before the commencement of the Eid two-raka'ats prayer, was pelted with broken bricks and sachet water by angry worshippers.

The incidence caused confusion at the area, prompting security agents such as the policemen, civil defence and the State Security Service (SSS) officials, to throw a blanket security cover around the governor's convoy.

Although the situation was quickly brought under control, four suspected assailants were arrested by the security agents.

The governor, some high ranking federal and state government officials like the Minister of Sports and Chairman of National Sports Commission (NSC), Malam Bolaji Abdullahi, however, made it into the prayer arena, amid the confussion, while the prayer got under way at exactly 10:25 a.m.

The Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu Gambari, former Governor Bukola Saraki of the state, among other dignitaries, were already seated at the praying ground when Ahmed and his entourage arrived.

After the prayer, Ahmed and Saraki, while leaving the Eid premises, found time to acknowledge cheers from their supporters, exchanged pleasantries and chatted for some minutes. They left the ground later amidst tight security.

Chief Imam of Ilorin, Alhaji Mohammed Bashir Salihu, in his sermon shortly after the prayer, urged Muslims to continue to live pious lives after the fasting.

Emir of Ilorin and Chairman of the state Council of Traditional Rulers,Alhaji Ibrahim Kolapo Sulu Gambari, commended the governor for his efforts at sustaining peace and harmony.

He said: "I use this opportunity to commend our governor who has been doing his best for the people of Kwara state."

"I also want to advise the people of our dear state to sustain the atmosphere of peace and harmony that has been known with Kwara state for years, which earned us the acronym of State of Harmony.

"Kwara remains the most peaceful state in the North, and the country in general, to the extent that deploying soldiers to the state is tantamount to asking them to come and rest.
