Kwara United to Host Asante Kotoko at MKO Abiola Stadium as Ilorin Stadium Ruled Out
The Ogun State Football Association has confirmed that Kwara United will host their CAF Confederation Cup return leg against Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta this Sunday, The PUNCH reports.
Speculation had mounted in recent days over the venue for the Harmony Boys' second-leg tie, following persistent doubts about the readiness of the Rashidi Yekini Stadium in Ilorin.
While Kwara United officials had remained hopeful of staging the fixture in their home city, Ogun FA Chairman and Nigeria Football Federation Executive Board member Ganiyu Majekodunmi clarified that Abeokuta had been selected.
Majekodunmi explained to our correspondent that the state's flagship stadium is now hosting top-level matches, including continental fixtures, and confirmed that agreement had been reached for Kwara's clash with Kotoko to be held there.
"Kwara United will play their second leg here against Asante Kotoko on Sunday, at this same venue," Majekodunmi told The PUNCH at MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta.
The decision comes after Kwara began their 2025/26 Confederation Cup campaign with a dramatic 4-3 defeat in Kumasi last weekend.
Despite twice drawing level through Johnmark Aule's brace, the Nigerians fell behind to strikes from Emmanuel Antwi, Joseph Ablorh and a penalty from Albert Amoah, who secured a brace for the hosts.
Abdulraheem Shola struck late to keep the tie alive, leaving the second leg finely poised.
Kwara, winners of the 2025 Federation Cup, are seeking to progress to the next qualification phase of the competition, where Morocco's Wydad Casablanca await.
Their coach, Tunde Sanni, will be banking on a rousing display in Abeokuta to overturn the slim deficit and seal a place in the group stages.
