Kwara Assembly Seeks Review of Environmental Policy

Kwara State House of Assembly Wednesday urged the state government to review its environmental policy to ensure healthy living among the people.

The lawmakers made the call in its resolution after adopting the report of its committee on health and environment on the filthy conditions in some part of IIorin metropolis.
The Deputy Speaker, Prof. Gana Yissa, who presided over the proceedings while reading the resolution of the Assembly on the issue, condemned the indiscriminate dumping of refuse by residents at various parts of the state.

The Assembly advised the state government to as a matter of urgency review its environmental policy in order to maintain decent environment.

The review of the policy, the deputy speaker, added would allow all the agencies responsible for the clearing of refuse to be alive to their responsibility.

While directing the state Ministry of Environment and Forestry to evacuate all refuse dumped at various locations in the state capital and beyond to save the people from epidemic, the Assembly also ordered the ministry to embark on sensitisation programme on proper refuse disposal to curb indiscriminate dump of refuse by the residents.

Some of the areas where refused were abandoned in the state capital, according to the committee report, are GRA area, University of IIorin Permanent site road, Adewole Estate, Ibrahim Taiwo road, GeriAlimi, Olounsogo, Oloje among others.
