FG to take over Kwara cargo terminal

Date: 2012-12-26

Indications have emerged that the International airport cargo terminal in Ilorin being built by the Kwara State Government may be taken over by Federal Government as its project.

The Chairman, Senate Committee on Aviation, Chief Hope Uzodinma, gave the hint during his visit to the cargo terminal in Ilorin on Wednesday.

He stated that the Federal Government planned to have six regional cargo international airports.

He added that the initiative of the Kwara State government under the then immediate governor, Dr. Bukola Saraki, was a commendable foresight.

He added that the continuation of the project by the current governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed, was a step in the right direction, which he said would give the electorate value for the public resources.

He said, "We are quite impressed about what we have seen.  We want to begin to ensure that government is prudent over the management of resources.

"The idea of six regional cargo international airports is a welcome idea in Nigeria. Part of the reason for this inspection is to see how we can migrate from this as a state project to a federal project."

He also said, "The Transformation Agenda of President Goodluck Jonathan is really to transform the country economically, socially and politically. Apart from other benefits inherent to this project, there will be immediate creation of employment. So, in the vision of the Federal Government, if what FG envisaged is already in existence, of course, it goes without saying that the state will be encouraged in its vision to develop an international cargo of this nature.

"If, in the vision of the Kwara State Government, they have already started and so much work had been done, it will be a very serious factor when final decision on the issue will be taken. I do hope that the contractors should please complete as promised by February so that government will begin to look at other ways of supporting and intervening."

He commended Kwara State for embarking on such a project even with its comparative meager federal allocation.

He said the committee was interested in national development, especially of the aviation sector, adding that it would continue to support state governments that showed commitment to the development of their states.

Uzodinma said, "It is really impressive that Kwara State with very meager amount of money they receive is able to embark on jumbo projects of this nature. It is quite commendable.  We, as partners with government in development for the overall interest of our people, will continue to support hard working governors and governments."
