Kwara Orders Residents to Quit River Niger Banks
The Kwara State Government, on Wednesday, asked residents along the banks of the River Niger in Kosubosu and Jebba to immediately vacate their residence, following the forecast of an impending flood disaster.
The state Commissioner for Environment and Forestry, Hon. Samuel Bamisaiye, who made the call, particularly enjoined those residing at the river banks in the two communities to relocate without further delay.
"We are using this medium to call on residents of Kwara State, particularly Kosubosu, Jebba and others living along the river banks to vacate their residence in order to avoid damages that may occur as a result of flood disaster", the commissioner stated.
"This call becomes imperative after an alert on likely food in some states, including Kwara Sate through meteorological forecast."
The commissioner also admonished residents in the state to keep drainages in their surroundings clean, just as he warned them to desist from indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drainages and other water channels.
Bamisaiye charged Kwarans to cut the bushes surrounding their buildings, warning that the ministry would use appropriate sanctions against any building with bushy setbacks.
He also warned the public against trekking on the medians, thereby destroying the ornamentals planted for city beautification in the state.
The commissioner therefore called on animal herders to imbibe proper rearing procedures in order to prevent unnecessary accident on the roads while animals roaming about.
It could be recalled that the Nigeria Meteorological Agency had alerted on the looming flood disaster, which might be precipitated by torrential rainfall and warned the people to inculcate safety conscious as they prepare for the period.
