'Why National Waste Management Programme Failed' - Prof. Hilary Inyang
The National Integrated Solid Waste Management Programme failed owing to corruption and official subterfuge, a professor of Environmental Engineering and Science, Professor Hilary Inyang has said. Speaking in Ilorin, Kwara State, Inyang attributed the failure of the programme to drainage blockage, flood, water-borne diseases and land dereliction.
The don, who is also president of the Washington-DC-based Global Alliance for Disaster Reduction (GADR), called on the Federal Government to revitalize the programme and check all forms of inefficiency in the Federal Ministry of Environmen.
"The National Integrated Solid Waste Management Programme that was initially structured for seven Nigerian cities since 2006 was well-designed by the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo to rid the nation of trash, improve public health and provide jobs to Nigerians," he said.
