Date: 2017-01-24

In a bid to provide basic infrastructures for residents, Kwara State government has announced that work would commence on construction of Geri-Alimi Split Diamond Underpass in February.

? The State Commissioner for Works and Transport, Aro Yahaya, who made the announcement at the weekend, noted that the development follows handing over of the construction site to contractor in charge of the project.

Yahaya informed that the project which is aimed at easing traffic in the area would cost N2.9billion, adding that it is expected to be completed in 18 months.

He explained that talks have been held with owners of property that may be affected by the construction of the underpass, assuring that they would be compensated in accordance with relevant laws and policies.

The commissioner, however, noted that the owners would be paid compensation by the time the construction begins.

Yahaya also disclosed that his ministry has worked out plans on daily road closures to allow for the construction work, adding that this would soon be made known to the public.

Additionally, he stated that alternative routes such as Egbejila-Asa Dam road would be prepared for public use before the construction of the underpass commences.

He said that officials of Kwara State Road Traffic Management Authority (KWARTMA) would always be on ground to ensure smooth flow of traffic during the construction period.

The Commissioner also disclosed that the construction of Geri-Alimi underpass is among first set of projects to be funded under Kwara Infrastructure Development Fund (IF- K), noting more capital projects would be funded through the scheme.
