OPINION: The future of Kwara and the befuddled state of Kwara Youths: NAKSS as a case study. By Anifowoshe Titilope

"The youths of a Nation are the trustees of Prosperity " - Benjamin Disareli
"He alone who owns the youths gains the future" - Adolf Hitler
".. A society that cuts off its youths severs it's lifeline" - Koffi Anan

The above quotes depict the notion of every right thinking man, that the youths in any society are the powerhouse of commerce, the brain of the computer world, that youths are the forerunners of intellectual competence and the harbingers of purpose and zeal matched with the acuteness of our physical strength. As an active participant of student unionism and governance in Kwara state, I have always been caustic of the present administration of the state, I have never been a fan of the retarded style of development and progress in my state of origin. In the course of my agitations and criticisms I have met so many youths who seem to share the same ideology with me but at the end of it, their insatiable avariciousness and cupidity killed their zeal. Most times I get extremely disappointed at this 'grabby' nature of Kwara Youths especially student leaders, but in the words of my mum " you can't blame a man for being prehensile, when he and his household are hungry ". I later devised a means to be an impact maker rather than a noise maker ; I reduced my criticisms and channelled my energy into contributing my own quota to the development of humanity through Eagles Foundation for Humanity.

In my fictitious thinking, National Association of Kwara State Students is a body that stands vibrantly for the representation of the entire Students of Kwara (home and abroad). The body is saddled with the responsibility of ensuring adequate welfare of its members, coordination of students, sensitization of our members, existing as a capacity building platform that stimulates towards veritable leadership. Reality dawned on me when I got closer to the heat of hatred, disintegration, nepotism and corruption of NAKSS that the organization is a mere sham.

Just recently, a new administration was inaugurated and every indication including the electoral process that birthed the candidate shows that the president like our beloved Muhammadu Buhari wants to resuscitate the dead body of NAKSS. I didn't even think twice before I accepted the appointment of director of Media and publicity of the National body as I saw the appointment as an opportunity to not just complain about the rot in the system but show how things ought to be done with my appointment. Even though the biggest bane of the communal actualization of Mr Rozay's dream for NAKSS is the territorial proximity amongst the executive; he doesn't seem to be bothered as he is seriously ready to step on toes and shut mouths for the furtherance of the welfare and interest of Kwara students.

Yesterday I attended the first parliamentary sitting of the Senate council of National Association of Kwara State Students on the invitation of the president of the body. The aura of the parliamentary sitting weakened the enthusiasm in me; If not for the sight of the mace; I would have taken the sitting for a town hall meeting or a convergence of football fans for a football show. I saw parliamentarians on football Jersey and slippers, senators who are presumed to be representatives of reputable institutions in Nigeria opened their mouths and vomited codswallop and applesauce. Like students of creche I heard senators raise "fundamental observation,"celestial observation" etc. Student representatives who ought to be ambassadors of their institutions looked so yob and unfastidious.

The entrance of the short girl with five tall "guys" prompted one of the senators to raise a 'security observation'; after the Chief scrutinized us, we were allowed entry. I got entangled in a heated argument with a senator who is obviously gauche ; infact asides the fulfilment of being able to "orientate" the senators as regards standing orders and ethics of a parliamentary sitting ; I am a little disappointed in myself for engaging in such discussion with people of such nature.

Everything that happened at the sitting seems like a very interesting movie ; but in reality it's an indication of the bleak and hazy nature of the future of Kwara State!. If the affairs of governance and commerce is left in the hands of these youths ; then KWARA STATE IS IN JEOPARDY ! Imagine a convergence of representatives of Kwara students from almost all higher institutions in Nigeria characterized by such level of greenness, rowdiness and disarray ; imagine if these same persons take the mantle of governance or commerce of the state ; what will be the end result? What happened to reason and social order in youths? What happened to the manners and virtues our parents imbibed in us? Why do we misinterpret garrulous sagacity with hooliganism? Where are the intelligent civilized Kwara youths? Where is the future? What is the fate of Kwara with the future in our hands?
