Too many petrol stations in Ilorin worries residents
The proliferation of petrol stations in Ilorin metropolis, the Kwara State capital, has become worrisome to some stakeholders.
The Punch correspondent learnt that to address the anomaly, the Kwara State House of Assembly had directed that issuance of permit for construction of new petrol stations in the state be suspended pending the communication of new resolutions to the Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed
The House reached the resolution following a motion on indiscriminate establishment of petrol stations in Ilorin. It was raised by a member representing Ilorin North West Constituency, Mr. Abdul-Rafiu Abdul-Rahman.
The Speaker of the House, Dr. Ali Ahmad, said the indiscriminate construction of petrol stations could result in serious security, health and environmental hazards if not promptly checked.
He enjoined the state government to liaise with the Department of Petroleum Resources on the need to strictly adhere to laws, rules, environmental impact and regulations governing location of petrol stations.
He also directed the state's Town Planning Authority, DPR and all relevant agencies and stakeholders to be invited to brief the House on the menace and constituted a five-man ad hoc committee to investigate and report to the House.
