Why Kwara poly not in session now, by board
THE Chairman of Governing Board of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, Musa Yeketi, has debunked claim that the school is not in session due to either an alleged threat to peace by some students or unfulfilled demands of members of the academic staff of the institution.
Some students of the polytechnic had alleged victimisation by some persons trying to enforce picketing. The students alleged that they were driven out of their lecture rooms and compelled to vacate the school premises since last week Friday.
Some members of the academic staff of the school, who spoke with The Guardian in Ilorin, denied any knowledge of strike "over any increment in wage but if they attempt to give us increment, we are ready and will be happy for it".
Yeketi said the school was yet to announce any resumption date but was surprised seeing some of the students on the campus. According to him, nobody was authorised to send the students home as long as they conducted themselves well.
He said: "We intend to put some palliative measures in place before we announce resumption date.
We are not noted for epileptic running of academic calendars of the school. If you observed early this year, some of the students demonstrated over what they tagged 'inhuman treatment' by some commercial drivers plying their routes.
"If there was a demonstration before the removal of subsidy on petrol then, now that the removal had been done, what do you think would be the reactions of our students if we hurriedly ask them to resume? So we are meeting on what to do to solve some of the envisaged problems, especially on the issue of transportation before we would ask them to resume. We are not on strike and we are not embarking on any picketing. Students are free to come to the campus, but certainly only those who are peaceful will be welcome".
