Foreign media not fair to Nigeria - Unilorin VC
Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Professor Abdulganiyu Ambali, alleged in Ilorin yesterday that some international media have not been fair to Nigeria in their reportage of insurgency in the North-East of the country. He said there exists elements of bias in the coverage of the onslaught with ripple effects on the image of the country in the international community.
Ambali, who spoke through the Dean of Arts of the university, Professor Ayobami Akinwale, at the 2nd annual public lecture and leadership awards convened by a Lagos-based company, FEMCOM Communication in collaboration with National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and Nigeria Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) said watching foreign media reports on the insurgency does not reflect the true happenings in the crossfire.
He decried that the attention of international media is averse to festivity and communal development that portrays the good side of the country. The vice-chancellor, who also chaired the occasion, said insurgency was not new in the country, because according to him, "it starts like a play and it will end like a play".
I was at the United States of America two weeks ago, and I was watching television, and lo and behold, they brought the Boko Haram insurgents. What America is campaigning now, and I want our security to know this, is that our security people are engaging in the violation of human rights.
"That they (troops) will just get to villages and ask the people, are you not Boko Haram, they start to beat them and even kill them and all that. It was on Channel 25 in Atlanta. I was very angry when I saw the report. And so I was lucky to be interviewed by the Radio station of the University of Ilorin. And I had to correct some of the things I saw on television.
"And I said on Radio that the report that I saw is nothing but something that comes from CNN. CNN is not interested when you are holding Osun Osogbo; they are not interested when you are holding Calabar carnival and they have no business with you when you are doing the turbaning of an Emir in the North. But once there is problem, they will land. And I said, is this objective journalism? Is this the we want to carry on?
The Guest Speaker at the occasion and NEMA Zonal Coordinator, Minna office, Mr Slaku Lugard Bijimi, stressed the need for synergy between security agencies, saying such ugly development has been apparently responsible for the inability to end terror in the country.
He also urged the police to build the confidence of the people in the force to enable them volunteer useful informations.
At the event, Unilorin vice-chancellor, Secretary to the Kwara State Government, Alhaji Sola Isiaka Gold and Vice President, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Issa Aremu, were presented with meritorious award.
