Kwara Attorney General tasks FG on prison decongestion
The Kwara State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Kamaldeen Ajibade, has challenged the Federal Government to initiate measures aimed at decongesting prisons across the country.
He said presently, the facility is over-crowded with no adequate provision to cater for the increasing number of inmates.
Ajibade, who made this known while receiving the Presidential Committee on Prerogative of Marcy led by its Secretary, Dr Adeyemo Mudashiru Tunde, in his office in Ilorin, urged the committee to look into more cases of serving inmates with a view to increasing the chances of prisoners that would benefit from the presidential amesty.
The Attorney General said his ministry would be ready to support the committee to achieve the objective for which it was constituted.
In his remark, the leader of the team, Dr Mudashiru Tunde, said the committee was put in place to visit prisons across the country so as to release or remit the terms granted by the court on inmates who committed federal offences.
He noted that the committee's guidelines include reviewing cases of inmates who have committed federal offences; those who are up to 60 years and above and inmates who have long terms of sentence among others.
The team host, Comptroller of Prisons, Ilorin Ayokanbi Olumide, led the Presidential Committee to the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, while the Solicitor-General and Permanent Secretary, Mrs Funsho Dada Lawal commended the Presidential Committee's hard work, while wishing them all the best in and out of Kwara State in her vote of thanks.
Others present at the courtesy visit are Directors of the Ministry of Justice, team members of the Presidential Committee and those of the comptroller of prisons.
