Kwara State Government organises Workshop for State Executive Council and Permanent Secretaries

Date: 2011-12-20

Poor governance has been identified as the heart of Nigeria’s inability to achieve its full potentials which ultimately plunged the country into the present social and economic problems.

The Chairman, Kwara State Fiscal Responsibility Commission, Alhaji Shehu AbdulGafar, OON, made the assertion at the opening ceremony of a 2-day workshop organized by the Commission for members of the State Executive Council and Permanent Secretaries.

Alhaji AbdulGafar, who observed that the country’s problem is not as much that of scarcity of resources but its inability to manage what we have prudently, commended the State Government for establishing an institutional watchdog for the enthronement of accountability, integrity, transparency and prudence in the conduct of government fiscal operations.

According to him, if the state must take its rightful position in the country, every step must be taken by government to ensure prudent management of state’s resources, long term macro-economic stability, transparency in fiscal operations of public expenditure and revenue collection in the collective interest of the people.

He charged all public office holders to brace up to the challenges and remember to do that which is right at all times in accordance with the Financial Instructions, noting that we shall be pecuniarily responsible for our action or in action.

The vision of the Commission, AbdulGafar said, is to achieve a transparent and effective government financial management framework and to reform the state’s public finance through regular monitoring of government financial activities.

Declaring open the workshop, the State Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed reinstated his determination to ensure cost effectiveness and reduce wastage of public funds in the conduct of government business.

He said the Commission has a fundamental role to play in his administration’s quest to ensure probity and transparency in governance, which he described as one of the pillars of the 2012 budget.

Alhaji Ahmed, who also commended the Commission for organizing the workshop, urged participants to pay good attention to the deliberations and participate in the workshop proceedings so as to save them from undue embarrassment in and out of government.

The theme of the 2-day workshop is: "Fiscal Responsibility as a pinnacle for anti-corruption, financial prudence, management and control of state resources".
