First Students' Union Congress Holds At Unilorin
The current administration of the Students Union Government (SUG) in the University of Ilorin, Kwara State is winding up. But the executives are bowing out in style by organizing the first ever students union congress.
What might sound normal to students in other universities is a feat for those in the University of Ilorin. For the first time students sat with their leaders to discuss issues that affect them.
The Students Union Government (SUG) led by Surajudeen Musa organized the first congress of the students union at the Sciences Lecture Theater on May 2.
Musa while addressing the students on some of the achievements of the union under his leadership said it had met with attracted different investors to come and build hostels starting next session in response to clamour by students for provision of accommodation.
He said the union had also completed 30 shops in the students' union complex which had been abandoned since 2002.
"We have increased the number of minibusesfrom 15 to 35 and the Kwara State Government has promised to give us two 56 seater-buses. We have reduced all our salaries by 45 per cent," Musa said.
At the congress, the students' union constitution which had been reviewed to give more students freedom under the chairmanship of FaloyeAyobamigbe was adopted.
One of the students Adeyemi David, 400 level Art, asked the union to provide an electronic copy of the amended constitution to all students.
Ridwan Olamilekan, 500 level Agriculture, said students were not happy when the union failed to defend them after been chased out of their hostels during the West African Universities Games (WAUG).
