Kwara Assembly makes case to reward outstanding students

The Kwara State Government has been urged to as a matter of necessity reward excellence in all endeavors to ensure improved performance.

The State House of Assembly made the call recently in its resolutions following a Matter of General Public Importance raised by the House Leader Hon Hassan Oyeleke on "Creating avenue for rewarding outstanding Students and attention for extremely poor students in the State".

This according to the House in its resolutions read by the Deputy Speaker Elder Matthew Okedare would restore the glory of rewarding excellent performances in the State, thereby inspiring others to excel in their academic pursuit and chosen careers.

The House equally enjoined the State Government to design welfare programmes in educational institutions in the State that would assist indigent students to realise their potentials .

The House Leader had while raising the motion highlighted the need for the State Government to design a policy of giving special privileges like scholarship, automatic employment for exceptionally brilliant students in Primary, Secondary and Post Secondary Institutions to serve as encouragement and inspire others to excel in their academic pursuit.

Indigent Students according to him equally deserved the attention of the State Government to make them realise their potentials, and redress their psychological problems, stressing that failure to do this could make the affected students become nucleus of societal ills.

Other members who spoke on the Motion emphasized the need for the State Government to revive the culture of encouraging excellence as well as affluent individuals to assist indigent Students in realising their educational potentials to enable them contribute meaningfully to the socioeconomic development of the country.

The House equally acknowledged the receipt of a message from the Governor Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed informing the House on the dissolution of Local Government Councils in the State.

Meanwhile, the House has restated its commitment towards providing a platform for good governance in the State.

The Chairman House Committee on Information, Social Development, Youth Sports and Culture Prince Saheed Popoola gave the assurance today in Ilorin, while briefing newsmen on the activities of the House in the last one week.

Prince Popoola who said the 8th Legislature under the leadership of Dr Ali Ahmad would continue to be responsive to the yearnings of the people who elected them into office praised the Media and the Public for their support to the legislature since it's inception 17 months ago.
