NSCDC rescues suspected kidnapper from being lynched
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the suspect, who refused to disclose his name, was nabbed at Iwo Street in the metropolis, where he had been living like a destitute in the past three months.
A community leader in the neighbourhood, Otanola Olaosebikan, told NAN that the suspect, who claimed he was from Lokoja, usually paraded himself as a beggar on Iwo Street.
Olaosebikan said that man ran out of luck when a commercial motorcyclist went into the bush where the suspected kidnapper lived to ease himself and saw him making a call.
He said that when the motorcyclist raised an alarm to alert the people that a perceived lunatic was making a call, the suspect attacked him.
Olaosebikan said that before residents could come to the rescue of the motorcyclist, the suspect had thrown his two cell phones into the bush.
The community leader added that the suspect was later mobbed by irate residents who attempted to lynch him before officials of the NSCDC came to his rescue.
When NAN correspondent got to the scene, the man was soaked in his own blood.
The residents had poured palm oil on the suspect and were about to set him ablaze when he was rescued.
About seven polythene bags containing the palm oil, old clothes, black soap, CD player, phone charger and three torch lights and batteries were recovered from the scene.
Also recovered from the scene were earthen and aluminium pots of different sizes, a pair of children's shoes, three gas lighters, yams and cocoa yams.
The suspect, who told NAN that he operates with 12 other gang members, refused to disclose their identity and where they live.
Efforts by the people and officers of NSCDC to recover the two phones were futile as nobody could locate the exact point where the suspect allegedly threw them.
The suspect also refused to disclose the numbers of the two phones.
Alhaji Ibrahim Abdulkadir, the Public Relations Officer of the NSCDC Command in the state, told NAN that the suspect would be detained pending the outcome of investigation.
