Nigerian Journalists not Fighting Corruption - Na'Allah
Vice-Chancellor of Kwara State University Professor Abdulrasheed Na’Allah has said journalists in Nigeria have abdicated the fight against corruption and impunity in all facets of the national life.
“I make bold to say that in Nigeria, the media has abandoned the fight against corruption”, he said.
Delivering a lecture at the investiture and award ceremony organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kwara Council, the vice chancellor charged them to embrace investigative journalism which would enable them to unearth the ills in the society.
He said through investigative journalism, manipulation, exploitation and destruction of lives and properties that have become prominent features of the Nigerian society would be addressed, adding that journalists would be assisting the three arms of government in discharging their mandates.
The vice chancellor said the situation in Nigerian media circle is “total abandonment” of the responsibility of exposing the ills in the society through investigative journalism and called on the media practitioners to wake up from their slumber.
Na’Allah, a Professor of African Comparative Literature, also called on Nigerian journalists to optimize the opportunity of the contemporary 21st century by deploying the electronic media in mobilizing the people.
