Remo Stars, Kwara United to Play Continental Matches in Abeokuta
The MKO Abiola International Stadium in Abeokuta has been confirmed as the venue for key fixtures in this season's CAF Inter-Club competitions, hosting matches involving Nigerian sides Remo Stars and Kwara United, as well as Comoros champions US Zilmadjou.
Remo Stars, the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) titleholders, will play both legs of their CAF Champions League preliminary round tie against US Zilmadjou at the Abeokuta venue. The Sky Blue Stars are set to host the Comoros outfit on 21 September, with the return leg scheduled for 26 September both matches taking place at the same stadium.
US Zilmadjou, whose home ground does not meet CAF's international standards, opted to stage their "home" fixture in Nigeria, a decision mirroring last season's approach when they faced Rangers International FC at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.
The selection of the MKO Abiola Stadium underscores its growing status as a reliable hub for continental football, offering modern facilities and central access within South-West Nigeria.
Meanwhile, Kwara United will also benefit from the Abeokuta stadium facilities as they prepare to host Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko in the second leg of their CAF Confederation Cup preliminary tie on September 28th.
The development further highlights the MKO Abiola Stadium's growing relevance as a neutral and reliable venue for continental competitions, providing a platform for Nigerian and visiting clubs to showcase their talent on the African stage.
