FG Distributes 3,500 Life Jackets to 12 States Amid Boat Accident Crisis
The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, has launched a nationwide distribution of life jackets to 12 Nigerian states to enhance safety in water transportation.
Minister of Marine and Blue Economy Adegboyega Oyetola officially launched the initiative in Minna, with 3,500 life jackets allocated to each state.
While acknowledging that the quantity may be insufficient, the minister emphasized the need to continue advocacy and awareness campaigns to improve safety standards for inland water transport users.
The initiative follows frequent boat accidents, including over 140 fatalities recorded in Niger and Kwara States between June and October 2023.
With 16 out of 25 local government areas in Niger State situated along waterways, water transportation remains a crucial means of travel for many residents.
