Rep seeks NJC's intervention in Kwara judiciary strike
Chairman, Committee on Justice, House of Representatives, Dr. Ali Ahmad, has urged the National Judicial Council to intervene in the one week strike embarked upon by the Judicial Staff Union of Nigeria, Kwara State branch.
The workers went on strike after the reinstatement of Justice Raliat Elelu-Habeeb as the Chief Judge of the state by the Supreme Court.
Ahmad, who is also a member representing Ilorin East and South Federal Constituency, in an interview in Ilorin on Monday, said the verdict of the apex court was sacrosanct and must be respected.
He, however, said the workers had a right to go on strike. He stated that there was also the need to look into the grievances of the workers, adding that if they were genuine, an amicable option should be provided.
According to him, the strike has affected innocent people negatively.
He said all stakeholders should meet and find a solution to the impasse, adding that the NJC is the most appropriate body to intervene, in the crisis in the state judiciary.
Ahmad said, "The Supreme Court has ruled and my position is that the position should stand. But on the other hand, the workers have their complaints and within the confines of the constitution, they have the right to do so, if it is not violent."
