10 killed, many injured in Kwara auto crash

About 10 people have lost their lives in a fatal road accident in Kambi village along Ilorin-Jebba Express in the Moro Local Government Area of Kwara State.

The incident which occurred in the early hours of Friday involved a white Toyota Hiace commercial bus with the number plate, XC 157 SMK, and a Ford truck used for transporting logs of wood.

The bus, which took off from Minna, Niger State, was said to be heading for the South with some of the passengers travelling for Sallah.

Nineteen people including the driver were said to be involved in the accident out of which 10 died instantly, a source told our correspondent.

The commercial bus was reportedly speeding when it had a head on collision with the truck, an eyewitness said.

The bus driver was said to be among the accident survivors.

It was learnt that some victims who sustained serious injuries had been taken to the hospital for treatment and the corpses recovered from the scene deposited at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital Mortuary.

The Kwara State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Jonathan Owoade, said the incident occurred in the early hours of Friday.

He said, "The driver of the 18-passenger bus survived. They were coming from Minna going to Offa but rammed into a stationary log-carrying truck which had broken down on the road.

"Ten of them died instantly while the survivors including the driver have been taken to the hospital. The corpses have been deposited at the morgue of the UITH."
