Kwara spent N281m on flood victims in 14 months

Date: 2017-06-03

SPECIAL Adviser to the Kwara State Governor on Emergency and Relief Services, Alhaji Abdullahi Duro Mohammed, yesterday disclosed that the state has spent not less than N281 million on the distribution of relief materials and cash donation to the flood victims in the last 14 months.

Mohammed, who spoke to Nigerian Pilot in Ilorin, said the figure covered the amount expended on the victims of natural disaster since his assumption to office in the state.

He sympathized with the victims of the recent flood disaster that submerged houses, collapsed bridges and destroyed property including over 250 bags of rice in Ilorin with a pledge that the state government would provide the affected victims with succour.

Abdullahi, who described the incidence as very unfortunate said, the state governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed, had directed him to carry out an on-the-spot- assessment on the affected houses, shops and market places.

He appealed to the Federal Government to as a matter of priority consider the need to swiftly come to the aide of the victims of the recent flood disaster which destroyed properties worth millions of naira in the state.

Abdullahi said his office was working round the clock to ensure that the affected people are compensated accordingly so as to ameliorate their suffering.

The governor's aide, however, called on the FG to include Kwara Central Senatorial District as part of the areas earmarked for the on-going construction of Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, camps across the state.

Abdullahi, who disclosed that the FG Government had commenced the construction of the IDPs camps in Patigi and Lafiagi while Kaiama or Baruteen project has also been pencilled down for consideration, said the inclusion of Ilorin central would serve as a temporary abode for the victims of the flood disaster in Ilorin metropolis.

He admitted that the omission of Kwara central from the project was not unconnected with the rear cases of flood disaster in Ilorin metropolis compared to the way and manner the flood wrecked havoc in the Northern part of the state.
