The Kwara State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Comrade
Abiodun AbdulKareem says the Council is determined to weed the Union out
of quacks.
According to him, there are non practicing journalists using the
Union's Identity cards and stickers, claiming to be members of the nobel
profession.
Comrade AbdulKareem described such act as impersonation that must not be
allowed in the profession, adding that the Council would partner with
the law enforcement agencies to curb the activities of the
impersonators.
The Council Chairman said this on Tuesday at the inauguration of the new
Executive members of the Radio Kwara Chapel of the Nigeria Union of
Journalists, held at the Mandate studio hall of Radio Kwara.
At the election conducted by the State Executive Council of the Union,
Mr. Bashir Ademola Jimoh was re-elected as the Chairman of the Union,
Mrs. Mariam AbdulKadri-Yusuf emerged as the Vice Chairman, while Mallam
Mahmood Olayinka Alaya was elected as the new Secretary of the Chapel.
Other officers elected are Mrs. Medinat Yusuf as the Assistant
Secretary, Mr. Abdulhameed Alaiye was re-elected as the treasurer and
Mr. John Adewoye emerged as the Financial Secretary.
Administering the oath of office on the executive members, Comrade
AbdulKareem stressed the need for members of the Union to always adhere
strictly to the constitution of the professional body.
He charged the new executive members to discharge their duties inline
with the guidelines of the constitution of the Nigerian Union of
Journalists.
The NUJ Chairman thanked the state government for the ongoing renovation
of the state owned media houses, stressing the need for government to
hasten work on the renovation to enable the workers carry out their
duties effectively and efficiently in a conducive environment.
Comrade AbdulKareem appreciated the government for carrying out the
promotion exercise of the staff of Radio Kwara and appealed to the
government to reciprocate the gesture to the workers of other media
houses such as the Herald Newspaper and Kwara State Television.
He stressed the need for all chapels of the Union to always remit their
checks up dues and practicing fees to the Council annually.
Comrade AbdulKareem charged the leadership of all Chapels to initiate
programmes that would generate revenue for the Chapel to run its
activities.
In his remarks, the General Manager of Radio Kwara, Alhaji Abdullateef
Adedeji represented by the Secretary of the Corporation, Alhaji Ola
Saad, said Unionism should not be established on radicalism but as a
formidable union to fight for the welfare and right of its members.
The General Manager pledged the support of the Management of the Station
to the programmes of the Union towards ensuring success, saying that
salaries of the station workers are paid as at when due while staff are
also promoted.
Alhaji Adedeji urged the two union leaders both NUJ and RATTAWU to be
modest, upright and transparent in the affairs of their Unions.
In his acceptance speech, the new Radio Kwara Chapel Chairman of the
Union, Alhaji Bashir Ademola Jimoh, promised to run a transparent and
participatory administration, assuring that new programmes would be
embarked upon to improve the Internally Generated Revenue of the Chapel.
Also speaking, the Radio Kwara RATTAWU Chairman, Comrade AbdulRasaq
Aremu, pledged the support of the Union to the activities of the NUJ
towards ensuring vibrancy in the activities of the two in house unions.
