Okada association dissociates self from criminal acts
Kwara State Joint Commercial Motorcycle Riders Association has disclosed plans to introduce a single uniform for all commercial motorcyclists, otherwise known as Okada riders across the state.
Speaking through its Chairman, Comrade AbdulRaheem Akanbi and Secretary, Mallam Abdulkadir Agarawu, in separate interviews with National Pilot in Ilorin, last weekend, the association said the decision was reached at a recent stakeholders' meeting, in Ilorin, the state capital.
It explained that the initiative was aimed at cleansing the image of the operators and flushing out impostors.
The association, an umbrella body for all commercial motorcyclists in the state, lamented that it had been very difficult convincing the state government on the need to rescind its ban on Okada operations in some areas of Ilorin metropolis.
It, however, said more efforts would be made at appealing to the government to temper justice with mercy.
The Okada association clarified that the decision to have one uniform for all its registered members across the state was to address the existing proliferation of uniforms and associations, thereby instilling discipline in the operators.
While dissociating itself from the reported cases of criminal acts involving Okada riders in the state, the association said henceforth, any Okada rider without identity card, uniform and number plate should be arrested by the law enforcement agents and made to face the full wrath of the law.
It, therefore, appealed to members of the public not to patronise such operators to prevent any eventuality, assuring that by the time the new uniform is approved by the authorities concerned, it would go a long way to restore confidence in the people.
