Ilorin Rainstorm Victims Want Lasting Solution

Date: 2012-06-16

Victims of last Tuesday rainstorm disaster in Ilorin, Kwara State, along Ajase-Ipo road, Royal Shekina Hotel area have called on the state government to find a lasting solution to the incessant problem ravaging the area.

Some of them, who were weeping profusely, when Saturday Tribune visited, said that they had lost property worth several thousands of naira to the disaster, calling on government to come to their aid.

Saturday Tribune gathered that the heavy rain lasted about one hour, destroying furniture, food items, office equipment and other materials, while erosion submerged some residential and business buildings within the area.

This was as a result of the flood occasioned by the heavy rain, with some residents saying the damage would have been more had the state government not de-silted the open drainages in the area recently.

Also speaking, the Special Adviser to the Kwara State governor on Infrastructure, Otunba Taiye Afolabi, said that the state government would not relent in its efforts to find a lasting solution to the perennial problems of floods and implored the residents to be calm.

Afolabi, who was at the scene of the disaster, said the attention of the appropriate authorities would be drawn to the incident.

While commenting on the damages caused by the flood, he stated that the Special Adviser to the state governor on Emergency and Relief Materials, Alhaji Musa Abdullahi, would take appropriate actions to ameliorate their loss.

Afolabi remarked that all stakeholders would meet and decide on how to put an end to the problem of flood in the state.
