Man remanded for duping woman
An Ilorin Magistrate Court has ordered a 48-year-old man, Segun Abayomi Joseph be remanded at the Federal Medium Security Prison, Mandala area, Ilorin for allegedly hypnotizing and duping a woman of her American dollars and Nigerian naira worth over N300,000.00.
The accused, who lives at Oke-Ola Street, Oro, Kwara State, was arraigned on a two count charge of criminal conspiracy and advanced fee fraud, ran into trouble when the magistrate ordered for his presence before it.
His victim, Mrs. Thomas Oyebola Abiodun of No, 2, Ojab-Oba Lane, Irewolede Housing Estate, Ilorin claimed that she withdrawn the $1000 from a bank.
The victim had reported the matter at the State Intelligence Bureau, Nigeria Police, Sate Headquarters, Ilorin, that the accused criminally conspired with one Kayode of no fixed address to dupe her of $1000 and N155,000.
According to the victim, on October 5, 2011 she went to Access Bank Plc, Ibrahim, Taiwo Road, Ilorin to withdraw the sum of $1000 sent to her by one Mrs. Owolabi Olasunbo who lives in the USA.
She alleged that the accused alighted from a car with registration number MX 304 AAA in front of the bank and greeted her after which he told the victim to look at his face and she did so.
"When he came down from the vehicle he told me to look at his face and after I looked at his face, I became unconscious," she said.
The victim alleged further that the accused ordered her to enter the car and drove her away to an unknown destination where he collected the dollar notes she withdrew from the bank.
"He also commanded me to take him to my house and bring all the money I have which I did and I gave the sum of N155,000 to both of them," the victim reported.
The prosecutor, Corporal Sanni Abdulahi informed the court that investigation into the case is yet to be completed, he objected to the bail of the accused and urged het court to remand him pending the outcome of the investigation.
The trial magistrate, Mrs. Mercy Abikoye, who agreed with the submission of the prosecutor, stated that the alleged offence is not ordinarily bail able.
