Governor Saraki forwards Bill on Kidnapping to the Kwara State House of Assembly

Date: 2009-11-09

Kwara State Governor, Dr Bukola Saraki has forwarded a new bill to the State House of Assembly requesting for the passage of a law prohibiting kidnapping in the State.

The bill, which may be cited as the Kwara State Prohibition of Kidnapping Bill 2009, seeks to prescribe appropriate punishment for any person who commits the offence of kidnapping in the State.

According to the Governor, the bill becomes imperative in view of the incessant cases of kidnapping in the Country and the urgent need to avert the spread of the menace to the State.

Upon the consequent passage of the bill by the State House of Assembly, it becomes an offence in the State to either kidnap or attempt to kidnap any person as such person shall be guilty of an offence which is punishable under the law.

Under the new bill, any person who commits an offence of kidnapping or attempting to kidnap shall be punished with imprisonment for life without an option of fine.

Dr Saraki urged members of the Assembly to give due consideration to the bill to enhance its prompt passage into law while thanking them for their continuous cooperation and understanding.
