Kwara APC disowns packaged garri campaign

Date: 2015-03-27

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State has alleged that the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is sewing uniforms associated with security agencies for use by its thugs in an attempt to rig and manipulate the forthcoming general elections.

The APC also said the PDP has packaged 1kg size of poisonous garri, branded with APC logo and photograph of Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed, in large quantity for distribution across the state.

The party urged Kwarans not to take such garri, saying it was not packaged by the APC.

In a statement issued in Ilorin on Wednesday by its publicity Secretary, Alhaji Sulyman Buhari, the party said, "We must state that the APC is not distributing packaged garri as souvenirs or gifts neither do the APC intend to distribute packaged garri before or during the forthcoming election".

The APC further said the PDP held a meeting on Wednesday where the plans were hatched, saying, "At the meeting, amongst other decisions, the leadership of the PDP resolved to sew police uniforms and uniforms associated with other security agencies for its thugs with the hope of deploying the uniformed thugs to manipulate the forthcoming election in favour of the PDP".

"Another set of armed thugs would also be dressed in black suits and traditional babariga attire, according to a credible source.

"Political thugs sponsored by the PDP intend to impersonate officers of our security agencies before and during elections to harass APC leaders and members, to kidnap and pick up some of our party officials, to intimidate voters at the polling units and to manipulate the electoral process in favour of the PDP.

In a swift reaction, the PDP chairman, Chief Iyiola Oyedepo told Daily Trust that the allegations were ridiculous and false. He said the police should arrest anyone caught doing that.

The chairman said the PDP was populated by "a refined set" of people who are law-abiding, saying the allegations was APC's stock-in-trade.
