Kwara Ex-Councillors Protest Unpaid Severance Package

Date: 2012-08-31

Ex-councillors from the 16 local governments of Kwara State stormed the Kwara State Government House  in Ilorin on Thursday demanding the payment of the balance of their severance package.

The chairman of the Ex-Councillors Forum, Mr. Rasheed Ibrahim, in an interview with journalists, claimed that about 80 members of the forum came for the protest on behalf of the  193 members of the forum in Kwara State.

He said they came to see the state Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed, to demand the payment of the balance of the severance package.

He lamented that they had been going through hardship and had come to demand their money many times in the past without any success.

He said they received some payments after pressurising the government.

He added that they were urged to ensure that the Peoples Democratic Party emerged victorious in the 2011 governorship election.

He lamented that after they had worked to ensure the victory of the party, they had yet to be paid their entitlements.

Ibrahim  said, "We are here not to fight the government of the state.

"We are here to make peace.  We have been coming here simply  to take our severance which is our constitutional right. It is our legitimate right. We left the office for the past many years and they promised to  pay the money to us but unfortunately, till now, nothing has been done."
