Kwara NUJ Correspondents' chapel gets new executive

The new executive committee of the correspondents' chapel of Kwara State council of Nigeria Union of Journalists has been inaugurated.

The inauguration followed the emergence of candidates for various offices in the chapel who were returned unopposed.

At the swearing-in ceremony held at the secretariat of the chapel in Ilorin today, Aliyu Usman of News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) was elected vice chairman, Umar Abdulwahab of Blueprint Newspapers emerged chapel secretary, AbdulAzeez Arowona of Nigerian Pilot elected Financial Secretary while Fausat Agunbiade of News Agency of Nigeria was also returned as Auditor of the chapel.

Following the disqualification of Lai Olanrewaju as a chairmanship aspirant in the election, the new vice-chairman, Aliyu Usman has been directed to chair the chapel in acting capacity pending the by-election for a substantive chairman.

Chairman, Kwara State council of NUJ, Comrade Abiodun Abdulkareem, who spoke at the brief ceremony said the inauguration of the chapel executive was in accordance with the provisions of the constitution of the union.

Abdulkareem explained that the swearing-in ceremony was to ensure that due process is strictly followed.

He said the union, as a legally constituted body, would not entertain infraction in whatever form and urged members to be properly guided by the constitution of the union in their conduct.

The NUJ chairman said gone are the eras where flagrant disobedience to the union rules and regulations was observed, saying the operation of all chapels in the state council must be within the stipulated guidelines.

Abdulkareem congratulated the new correspondents' chapel executive and admonished them to carry members along in their activities.

He assured that the state council of NUJ under his leadership would continue to respect the rule of law and due process while administering the affairs of the council.

Abdulkareem also called on the new executive to speed up the process of conducting by-election for the chairman of the chapel.

The acting chairman of the chapel, Aliyu Usman promised to justify the confidence reposed in him and assured that members would be carried along at all times.

He also assured that a by-election to fill vacant post of chairman would be conducted within thirty days.

An Ilorin-based legal practitioner, Barrister Abdulraheem Ismail, administered the oath office on members of the new executive committee of the correspondents' chapel.

The ceremony was attendance by NUJ Zonal Secretary of Zone D comprising North Central, Prince Olatidoye Akeem, members of the state executive council, elders in the council as well as members of the union.
